KUALA LUMPUR: A dumpsite which caught fire on New Year's morning near Kampung Sungai Kertas here might take a longer time to die out because of strong winds.
Selayang Fire and Rescue Department station chief Zakaria Aini said although the fire was under control, strong winds had aggravated the situation.
"As of now, it is under control. But if wind conditions change, the fire could start again."

Taman Desa Indah Residents' Association treasurer Kamarul Sulaiman said the open burning had taken a toll on the health of nearby residents and polluted the air around Selayang and Batu Caves.
"Many residents have fallen sick, especially those with respiratory problems because of the smoke.
"Before this, it was just the stench from the site."
Kamarul said the association had complained to the Selayang Municipal Council and the Department of Environment but no action was taken to clear up the site.
